Yes, that IS spec work.
Bad design by design, Design Contests
So I just saw a facebook status update from Gary Vaynerchuk, who I respect as an entrepreneur. But is having a design contest to design his next book cover. He specifically says it’s not spec work, because the winner will be paid. You are correct, it’s not spec work for the winner, but what about the other hundred designers who send you a cover idea? They aren’t getting paid and aren’t under contract with you.
Here’s his video introduction to the contest.
Here was my comment on his facebook status update:

There are so many comparisons I could have used, even one that would hit home with him. How about I ask multiple stores that sell wine to send me a bunch of free wine. I’ll drink it all in the next month and the one that I like the most… I’ll pay for. The rest, I’ll just send a thank you card to.
Or I could ask my dentist, who says I need a tooth removed, to remove it and if I like what he did, I’ll pay him, but if not, I won’t pay him.
UPDATE: A lot of people responded to me, so I responded to them and have posted the thread below. What do you all think about spec work?

St. Louis Panoramic
Photo of the Moment, Photography
A few a weeks ago, Rebecca and I headed to St. Louis for Krys’ wedding (I designed her wedding program/invites/etc – those will be posted soon!)
While we were there I got to go to the top of the Arch for the first time. I snapped a few pictures to later merge into a panoramic. I read in Scott Kelby‘s Digital Photography book that Photoshop has an ‘auto-merge’ option for creating panoramic photos. It worked beautifully, minus a few sky exposure inconsistencies and just a bit of choppy stitched edges that I cloned out.
For this image, I ended up repainting a consistent blue sky. To see the original, unedited sky, check my twitpic out here
I can’t wait to get my 21″ x 7″ print to come in so I can frame it. If you anyone is interested in purchasing a print, email stephen[at]creativeimprov.com (where [at] is the @ sign)
Some new photos!

Recently I took some graduation photos for Rebecca’s sister. This was my first official ‘portrait/people’ photoshoot. I learned a whole lot in the process, and what I screwed up on during the photoshoot, I made up for a bit in Photoshop… (shadows under the eyes due to no flash or reflector)
Design is not about innovation
Design Concept/Ideas, Someone Once Said...
Design is not about innovation. Design is about communication. Innovation in design is usually a wonderful byproduct or direct result of a particular need. Design that seeks to foremost be innovative will commonly fall apart under its own stylistic girth.
A very cool new WordPress plugin.
Usability, Viral Advertising, WordPress

Jeffrey Zeldman (@zeldman), self-proclaimed web standards guru just tweeted about a WordPress plugin for adding a Facebook ‘like’ button to your individual blog posts. So, of course I clicked through and checked it out! I instantly installed it on my blog here and tested it out. I absolutely love it.
It seems that most people shy away from commenting on blogs (or more recently even writing on your wall)… but they jump at the chance to simply express that they ‘like’ something you’ve posted (on facebook) I guess it’s the equivalent of nodding in agreement instead of speaking your full opinion of something. Bringing this feature to WordPress iss a no-brainer. When someone clicks ‘like’ on my blog posts, a simple note will be posted to your news feed saying ‘John Doe likes such and such’. Where, “Such and such” is the title of my blog post. How stinkin’ cool is that?
OK, now try it.(note that if you are viewing my blog homepage, you have click the blog post title to see the ‘like’ button under the content.)

Creative Improv, Someone Once Said...
Opportunity is missed by people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
— Thomas Edison
Read ‘opportunity’ as ‘success’. Want to be successful (in term of business)? Work your tail off and be talented, rinse and repeat. Don’t expect ‘success’ over night. Gary Vaynerchuk sums it up nicely in the video below.
