I ran across this documentary on Hulu about a  month ago. Lemonade tells the story of laid-off folks (mostly in advertising and creative fields) who are taking full advantage of all their extra free time. They are pursuing their true passions and finding so much joy in it. You might say that they are making lemonade out of lemons they’ve been handed in life.

Now it’s your turn!

What’s your lemonade story? Comment and share!

Check out this article on whether freelancing is a commodity or a profession.

My favorite part is this:

There seems to be a basic disconnect between what is needed to earn a living as a freelancer and what clients seem to want (at least on these outsourcing sites) to pay. The disconnect goes even deeper. Suddenly a client can define all aspects of a job from price to design, causing the designer’s role to change from that of a professional to that of a technician. It is unnerving.

I have to admit, though, I HAVE entered design contests in the past. I did so knowing that I may not win and get compensated for my work. I actually did win one contest for a website header, but it was the worst experience. because there were probably 20 revisions by the client and there was no contract to set the limits. Essentially I had no control over the project.

I won’t say that I’ll never enter another design contest, because I did enter another one only a month ago. I can say that I will do so with caution and much forethought, if for no other reason than to build my portfolio, when I’m looking for a particular client or project to include in my body of work.

MEADOW HEIGHTS CHURCH ‘REMEMBER’ MESSAGE SERIES

Another message series! I’ll have another one to post in two weeks. This one was a borrowed set of graphics from LifeChurch.tv. What is borrowed is the glass image and ‘remember’ logo. The rest is a unique design that fits the Meadow Heights ‘style’. It’s funny that Meadow Heights ‘style’ is identical to my design style. I just counted how many message series graphic sets I’ve designed for Meadow Heights….. drum roll please….. 28!

ICONNECT – YOUR ONLINE CONNECTION TO ALL THINGS ATSU

Still being developed, but I just had to share this. This is website numero deuce that I’ve developed for ATSU. It follows the same style that atsu.edu does and still has it’s own identity. The most important aspect is the ATSU blue banner that is consistant across all ATSU websites. The footer is a unique aspect that will be used on all new websites I develop. It’s an alternative to the global navigation at the top of the website.

SGA – STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION

This is a sneak peak at an even less developed website. the goal here is to globalize the two SGA’s – one for Arizona campus and one for the Missouri campus.

I’ve sent my résumé to twenty places. Five have told me they aren’t hiring. Two have told me I don’t have enough experience. The rest haven’t responded to any correspondences I’ve initiated.

You might be wondering why I’ve titled this post ‘Great Opportunities’. Here’s why:

This week I was contacted by a place I didn’t even apply to (because I didn’t know there was an opening). They would like to interview me for a web developer position. I had a phone interview Friday and will soon have a video conference interview.

Also this week, I was called by Jeff at StandPoint Communication. He heard about me from Todd, a guy I used to work for at Web Services. He would like to partner with my new company (more on that very soon!) to offer graphic/web design services to his clients. But the real kicker, his clients are people like previous Miss USA’s or celebrities who are now motivational speakers. He mentioned, “If say Miss America 1975 calls me and wants a website, I will say ‘hey, call stephen’.” And so there I am talking to Miss America 1975… and that’s where my new company comes in. I won’t say any more about it at this point.

and… my birthday is coming up. These are great birthday presents. ha!

Exciting times.
